I’m sure you have obligations in life that are non-negotiable - paying the bills, showing up to work when you don’t feel like it, etc. These are all things in life that are duties. However, you also have things in your lives that bring you delight.
It could be a certain meal, relationship, hobby, or event. These things give us anticipation, expectancy, and joy — these are what bring you delight. You want the things in life that bring you delight to dictate how you spend your resources (time, money, energy).
There are two simple ways that delight loses its power in our lives. One is overindulgence at the expense of meeting the demands of duties. Ever binge-watched a whole season of a show on Netflix? You know what I’m talking about. The other way that delight loses its power is when we don’t give ourselves the time or space to delight in anything. This is called workaholism.
Whatever it is that gives you a sense of delight, give yourself permission to do those things in their proper context. Looking forward to having delight will certainly give you an extra boost of strength to push through the things in life that feel more like a duty.
